How can I tell if a manual ball valve is open or closed?
Most hand-operated ball valves come with a straight lever handle as standard indicator. When the handle lines up parallel with the valve body and pipeline, the internal ball bore aligns with the pipe, meaning the valve is fully open for medium to pass through. If you rotate the handle 90 degrees crosswise against the pipeline, the ball’s through-hole turns perpendicular to flow path and cuts off fluid entirely, which is the closed status. Can manual ball valves be used for throttling service?
Manual ball valves are primarily designed for full open and full cut-off on-off control, not recommended for long-term partial throttling use.
