Rising vs. Non-Rising Stem
Stainless Steel Gate Valves are classified into outside screw & yoke (OS&Y) rising stem and inside screw non-rising stem two designs.
Rising Stem: The valve stem moves up and down, and the stem threads are exposed outside the valve body.
Handwheel rotation → stem extends upward → wedge gate rises to open the valve.
Non-Rising Stem: The valve stem only rotates without lifting. All stem threads are inside the valve body and immersed in the medium.
Handwheel rotation → internal threads drive the gate up and down, while the stem height remains unchanged.
Rising Stem: The longer the stem extends, the more open the valve is.
The open/close status can be directly seen with naked eyes, clear at a glance without scales.
Non-Rising Stem: The stem height stays constant all the time.
The opening degree cannot be seen directly; the valve status can only be judged by handwheel scales or indicators.
Rising Stem: The stem extends upward when opening, requiring large vertical space above the valve.
Not suitable for suspended ceilings or narrow pipeline spaces.
Non-Rising Stem: The stem does not rise, occupying minimal top space. Suitable for low-headroom areas, underground wells, trenches and buried pipelines.
Rising Stem: Exposed stem threads are vulnerable to moisture, dust, corrosion and rust.Short service life in outdoor, humid and acid-base environments.
Non-Rising Stem: Internal threads are protected by the medium and isolated from air and rainwater.Better anti-corrosion performance and longer service life.
Rising Stem: Suitable for all kinds of media, including sewage, impurities and particles.
Non-Rising Stem: Internal threads are prone to impurity blocking, clogging and seizing. Not suitable for sewage, slurry and dirty media; only applicable to clean water, clean oil products and clean gas.
Rising Stem:The exposed stem threads are prone to rust and need regular lubrication.Stem jamming and abrasion are visually observable, making maintenance and inspection convenient.
Non-Rising Stem Gate Valve:Internal malfunctions cannot be seen externally. Stem wear and seizing are hard to detect and repair, so the valve is usually replaced entirely once damaged.
Rising Stem: Available in a full range of small, medium and large diameters.
Non-Rising Stem: Mainly manufactured in medium and large diameters, widely used for underground buried pipelines.
In general, both types of Stainless Steel Gate Valves are widely used in daily applications. You can select the suitable product according to different working conditions.
