What exactly is a WCB Flanged Gate Valve?

It’s basically an industrial valve we use to fully open or close pipelines. Our WCB gate valve is made of cast WCB carbon steel, so it’s tough enough to handle daily industrial use.

The flanged type we make bolts straight to your existing pipe flanges, so installing it and taking it out for maintenance later is really simple. The valve works by moving a gate disc up and down inside the body — when it’s fully open, the flow goes straight through with barely any resistance. It’s commonly used in power plants, chemical plants, water treatment facilities and general industrial piping systems where reliable shutoff is needed.

What does the flange do on a gate valve?

The flange is the connection part at both ends of the gate valve. It’s basically a flat, circular plate with bolt holes, which lines up perfectly with matching flanges on your pipes. When you bolt them together, the flange presses evenly against a gasket to create a tight, leak-free seal. This not only keeps the system from leaking under pressure, but also makes it really easy to remove the valve later if you need to inspect, repair or replace it. Without the flange, you’d have to weld the valve directly into the line, which is a lot more work and harder to maintain.

What does “WCB” stand for in valves?

WCB is a standard cast carbon steel grade defined by ASTM. It stands for “Wrought Carbon, Grade B”. It’s one of the most widely used materials for valve bodies because it has good mechanical strength, excellent weldability, and decent resistance to moderate temperatures and pressures. That makes it a reliable and cost-effective choice for most general industrial applications, from water and steam to oil and gas pipelines. It’s especially common in cast valves like gate valves, globe valves and check valves.

Is carbon steel the same as WCB?

Not exactly, they’re not the same thing. Carbon steel is just a general name for a whole family of steels, where carbon is the main alloying element — there are tons of different grades under that umbrella. WCB, though, is a very specific cast carbon steel grade set by ASTM standards.

So the simple way to put it is: all WCB is carbon steel, but not all carbon steel is WCB. We choose WCB for our valves because it’s strong, easy to work with during production, and gives you really good value for most common industrial applications.
